One of the most entertaining things to me about tumblr (aside from just seeing what everybody else is thinking, and having a forum for my own wild ramblings), is what people find interesting and entertaining. Now, of course, I have only my own tumblog as a guide, but I’m always surprised by what people like, and what they don’t react to at all.

Needless to say, all of the stuff I post is stuff that I like, or that I’m interested in, or that I want to keep around for future viewing, reference, or just for the heck of it. But the reactions I get are often surprising.

For instance, I love Christmas (if you haven’t caught on). I like the lights, music, decorations, and the generally good feeling that most people have (or pretend to have) at this time of year. And I like thoughts and images about Christmases from the past, as well. So, when I posted this shot of Santa’s Village earlier today, I expected a lot of folks to be interested in it. It brought back memories from my childhood, and of the time my parents took the family to the Land Of Make Believe, where we saw Santa’s workshop, and an actual pole made of ice, standing in for the North Pole. However, not a single person reacted to that picture, or any of the other vintage pictures of Christmas villages. I found that not only surprising, but a little sad. To me, Christmas is fun. It’s not because I had truly great Christmases as a child as far as material things are concerned. My parents barely had two nickels to rub together as we were growing up, but we were always taught the importance of the spirit of the season, and the spirit of giving (as opposed to getting.) So I’ve always enjoyed the Christmas season, and I assume everyone else does as well.

On the other hand, this little throw-away post I made, about the National Sarcasm Society, evoked a huge response. I posted it because it amused me, but I never expected it would amuse so many other people as well.

All of which tells me one of two things: People don’t like Santa, or people are very sarcastic. From my experience, I’m betting the latter, but I think a bit of the former is at play as well, which is too bad. Not to get all Charlie Browny or anything, but getting into the spirit of Christmas (regardless of your religious or secular beliefs) has always seemed important. I know not everyone accepts the religious aspects of Christmas, and I know that many people are turned off by the commercialization of a holiday that now seems to start in mid-October (me included). But there’s always been something about December, and the Christmas season, that I’ve always enjoyed, and that a lot of people I know enjoy too, regardless of their faith. I’d hate to lose that feeling, and I hope that everyone, at some point, can enjoy the spirit of peace, and of giving, and of closeness with friends and family, that this time of year has always held for me.

I knew a young lady back in school who tattooed her eyeliner on……didn’t want to be bothered putting it on everyday…..

……one more reason that I’m glad that all I need in the morning is a razor and some aftershave.

Nope. Looked like she had eyeliner on. Maybe a bit heavier than ordinary, but I didn’t see a difference…….not that I’m an expert in the field….
