A brief thought about “patriotism”
(Edited to digress a bit)
Anyways. I am not patriotic. I will never get misty eyed during a national anthem or seeing our glorious flag wave in the wind. It’s just not something that moves me to much emotion. However, I am appreciative and hopeful to make the place I live ina better one, wherever it may be. It is nice to be American, but more so, Im just a human.
I’m curious ….. how did you feel during the aftermath of 9/11/01? Were you moved at all towards a “patriotic” feeling (however you may wish to define the term).
And something you said about the flag, lulu…..have you ever lived for an extended period overseas? Or visited someplace that doesn’t have even close to the freedoms we enjoy? A country where armed military walk the streets on a daily basis? Or where there is always the threat of attack? Or where you might need the right papers simply to board a train? After you’ve done that, I’d be very surprised if that first glimpse of the Stars and Stripes didn’t bring a tear to your eye.
The US isn’t perfect. But, overall, I’d rather live here than anywhere else, without hesitation, reservation, or doubt.
